Grading of patent foramen ovale (PFO) and emboli detection using right-to-left shunt assessment
PFO grading and emboli detection
This examination can nowadays also be performed using duplex and the TCCD preset. If a PFO can be ruled out using this approach, the Neuromobil specialist can often avoid more complex procedures such as transesophageal echocardiography.
Bilateral detection of the middle cerebral artery using 2 MHz probes fixed to a headset and the use of multigate technology enable us to grade a patent foramen ovale (PFO). Nowadays, this examination can also be performed by us using duplex and the TCCD preset.
If a PFO can be excluded using this approach, the Neuromobil specialist can often avoid complex further examinations such as transesophageal echocardiography. To better assess the hemodynamics and the embolic risk of a stenosis, we also perform emboli detection.
